Life Insurance Awareness Month 2026: Marketing Opportunities for Insurance Agents
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month — and for insurance agents, it’s an ideal time to start a conversation with consumers about financial protection.
But this year, that conversation may be more important than ever.
Research from the 2025 Insurance Barometer Study, conducted by LIMRA and Life Happens, shows a substantial gap between the number of Americans who have life insurance and the number who believe they need more coverage.
Only 51% of American adults report having life insurance.
At the same time, 40% say they need more coverage — representing close to 100 million adults.
For insurance professionals, that’s not simply a statistic.
It’s a marketing opportunity.
The Life Insurance Coverage Gap Is Still Significant
Life insurance is designed to help protect families financially. Yet millions of Americans remain uninsured or believe the coverage they have isn’t enough.
According to the 2025 Insurance Barometer:
- 51% of American adults report having some form of life insurance.
- 40% say they need more life insurance, representing close to 100 million adults.
- 47% say their household would have difficulty paying living expenses within six months if the primary wage earner died.
- 40% say their loved ones would be barely or not at all financially secure if their primary wage earner died unexpectedly.
Those numbers point to an enormous coverage gap.
But another finding may tell insurance agents something even more important about how to market.
Consumers May Need Education Before They Need a Sales Pitch
One of the biggest barriers to purchasing life insurance is the perception that it’s too expensive.
The 2025 Insurance Barometer found that healthy adults ages 18–30 overestimated the cost of a $250,000, 20-year level term life insurance policy by approximately 10–12 times its actual cost.
Think about what that means from a marketing standpoint.
Someone may recognize the importance of life insurance and still never contact an agent because they’ve already decided they can’t afford it.
The problem isn’t necessarily a lack of interest.
It may be a lack of information.
That’s why Life Insurance Awareness Month provides insurance professionals with an opportunity to educate — not simply sell.
Make Education Part of Your September Marketing
Instead of leading every message with a product or quote, use some of your September marketing to answer the questions and misconceptions that may be keeping consumers from taking the next step.
For example:
- Is life insurance as expensive as people think?
- How much coverage might a family need?
- Is coverage through an employer enough?
- When should someone review an existing policy?
- How can buying a home or starting a family change insurance needs?
Educational content can be used in direct mail, email, social media, newsletters and conversations with prospects.
You don’t have to answer every life insurance question in one message.
Sometimes the goal is simply to give someone a reason to ask the next question.
Target Life Stages — Not Just Names
Life Insurance Awareness Month also gives agents an opportunity to think more strategically about who they’re trying to reach.
Certain life events can change financial responsibilities and make conversations about protection more relevant.
Consider audiences such as:
- New Homeowners
- Families with Children
- Mortgage Holders
- New Movers
- Small Business Owners
- Consumers in appropriate age and life-stage groups
Buying a home, having children, taking on a mortgage, starting a business or approaching retirement can all change a household’s financial picture.
Instead of marketing to everyone, identify the audience that makes sense for the product and message you’re promoting.
Don’t Overlook Younger Consumers
Younger adults represent a particularly interesting opportunity.
LIMRA and Life Happens report that 54 million Gen Z and Millennial adults recognize a need for life insurance, yet misconceptions about cost and a lack of knowledge about products and underwriting can stand in the way of purchasing coverage.
There’s another reason insurance agents should pay attention to this group.
62% of all adults — and 80% of adults under age 45 — use social media to seek information about financial or insurance products.
That creates an opportunity to combine targeted outbound marketing with educational digital content.
Your direct mail piece doesn’t have to do all the work.
It can introduce the conversation.
Your website, social media, email and personal follow-up can continue it.
Mail. Call. Email. Educate.
Life insurance isn’t always an immediate purchase.
A prospect may see your mail piece today, visit your website next week, notice one of your social posts later and contact you when the timing is right.
That’s why consistency matters.
Use multiple channels where appropriate:
- Mail to put your message directly into the household.
- Call to create a personal connection and follow up.
- Email to reinforce your message and remain visible.
- Social Media to educate, answer questions and build familiarity.
The objective isn’t simply to reach more people.
It’s to create more opportunities for the right people to see your message.
Use Life Insurance Awareness Month to Start the Conversation
September gives insurance agents something they don’t have every month: a nationally recognized reason to talk about life insurance.
Use it.
Share educational information. Address misconceptions. Talk about changing life stages. Remind consumers that financial protection deserves a place in the conversation.
And most importantly, make sure you’re putting that message in front of an audience that makes sense for your agency.
