Reaching Home-Based Businesses

October 10th, 2006 by

Many marketers are interested in reaching home-based businesses. This is a great market for many advertisers.

Small business owners who operate their businesses out of their homes need a variety of goods and services.  But, you need to be able to find them. Dataman Group’s Home-Based Business list is a marketers’ best opportunity to reach this important market group.

In 2005, about 75% of the nation’s businesses are run by self-employed individuals who have no paid employees, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Nearly half of all U.S. businesses are home-based, the Bureau found.

Update for 2021

“Home-based businesses collectively generated a remarkable amount of economic activity, especially for women and minorities,” bureau Director Louis Kincannon said.

More than 30% of businesses owners are 55 or older, and an additional 29% are between 45 and 54. Only 2 percent are younger than 25.

Their business is the primary source of income for 70% of business owners who have employees. This is compared with 44% of business owners who don’t have employees. Most owners of firms with employees also work more than 40 hours a week.

Businesses without employees are more likely to be part-time ventures. 43% of owners of non-employer firms work less than 20 hours a week on their businesses. Want to see more statistics? Click HERE for the latest numbers in 2021. Some of these numbers will amaze you!

Times Change – and home-based businesses are stronger and more numerous than ever

In fact, if I were writing this blog during or after the Pandemic, I think the entire article would be much different. Many people left “regular jobs” to work from home. Many of those part-time jobs have morphed into all sorts of home-based businesses. Advertisers need to reach out to the small business owner.
