The P$ycle model is based on the socio-economic factors that have the greatest effect on consumer financial behavior, Experian's strategic partner is this is Claritas, Inc. , who surveys over 80,000 households each year to updates these factors.

Households are classified into 8 major segments - then further divided into 42 separate sub-segments clearly differentiating household financial diversity. In formation on the file is reported by two or more sources, which makes this model highly accurate.

The major segments are:

  • Wealth Market
  • Upscale Retired
  • Upper Affluent
  • Lower Affluent
  • Mass Market
  • Mid-scale Retired
  • Lower Market
  • Downscale Retired

Within each segment are a variety of other groups. For example:

Affluent Retired
(a sub-segment of the Upscale Retired segment)
Retired households with more than $50,000 income per year and income producing assets of less than $1 million year. Ages 65 and older. High users of fixed-interest accounts, investment products and annuities. Affluent Retired have high annual incomes despite their retired status, having planned and saved for their "golden years". They hold sophisticated products and have many financial relationships. Their lifestyles are active and clearly upscale.

High Asset Pre-Retired Investors
(a sub-set of Upper Affluent)
Households with income higher than $75,000 and income producing assets between $100,000 and $1 million, between the ages of 55 and 64 years. They are in their pre-retirement years with high income producing assets. Affluent Pre-Retired Investors are doing well and planning for active affluent retirements. They use credit products, as well as investments. In particular, they use home equity credit.
